This changes things

so Gilles Duceppe has changed his mind and is leaving the coronation to Pauline Marios. And here I was worried that I couldn't speculate about a federal election for a while. ;)

Does anyone want to wager what this does for Duceppe’s own career? He announced he was jumping to the PQ…. which recieved a unanimous “thud” from the party. The BQ MP’s urged him to go, the PQ MNA’s rejected him, and now he finds himself in a limbo.

I smell division and dissension on the way for the BQ ranks. Duceppe has exposed himself for a loser, and the last thing the separatist movement needs is a loser right now.

Ouch,

Duceppe has just unloaded both barrels into both feet. He’s toast now. Crispy toast in fact.

Public humiliation of this type is a career ending injury. His credibility is gone and he’s basically said he’s in it for the Government of Canada Pension.

Too bad, he’s not a bad guy…But he’s done now.

Apparently he’ll be asking his caucus for a vote of confidence, and we know how well those go over for the separatists. He’ll likely be looking for 75-80% support and, if not, well geez, yet another leadership race. So probably no federal election for a while yet, Greg.

bcbarbie:

Tasha Kheiriddin was on TV this morning saying that Duceppe has already announced he will not run in the next Federal election, so unless he changes his mind on that too, it looks like there will be a leadership race, and no federal election for a while.

Anonymous:

Duceppe will stay. The Bloc has nobody lined up to replace him, and the “stars” of the separation movement usually like to stay in Quebec City. The Bloc is often referred to as the B-team.

If the PQ under Marois regains its footing, the Bloc’s numbers could start moving up again.

don’t write him off - he came back from the hairnet after all.

Riley Hennessey:

The longer Gilles stays, the worse off the BQ will be. Nothing says “stagnant” like a dead-horse leader who flip flops on what party he wants to lead.
