Something tells me

At this risk of repeating myself, I've long believed that the Ontario Liberals would win a second majority. Not because Premier McGuinty has done a good job or anything, it is that he does the proto-typical Ontario middle-of-the-road act well. Get the bad stuff out early and then get out of the news.

Most recent polls show that a repeat majority is going to be stuff.
Liberals: 40%
Progressive Conservatives: 35%
New Democrats: 18%
Greens: 8%

But the Greens won 3% of the vote in the last election and I am very skeptical that they will get anywhere near 8% - even if the can capture some anti-Catholic vote. Could we see a last minute shift to the Liberals to save their majority? You can bet that is what groups like Working Families are hoping for - Buzz and his ilk strike again!

Interesting times

I don’t think Tory will pull in the votes. I don’t sense a lot of enthusiasm for him. Why vote PC when you can get the same thing with the Liberals? I don’t think those on the right who don’t like the Liberals don’t want to win badly enough.

I’ve thought the same thing but I am wondering if something else is coming into play. There was a lot of noise about Mike Harris and his share of the popular vote went up in his second majority victory. I am wondering if the so-called silent majority is ready to turf McGuinty.

odie441:

I am a member of the “silent majority in Ontario” and I am ready to turf Mcthief! I left ontario in 84, cam back in 99 and wish I could pack up and leave right now. Ontario used to be a great place to live until it turned into a bloody social experiment!

Sam:

odie441 - perhaps you should leave. Like it or not, and conservatives will only see it one way - we are better off than we were under Harris. Lies, promises whatever - it sure is better.

I remember because I’ve always lived here. I won’t go into the “horror” stories about my parents and what they went through and the health care situation under Harris/Clements - I was told I could have sued.

How about Harris/Flaherty hidden debt? Ya, they reduced taxes alright - reduced taxes on borrowed money.

We could go on. McGuinty may not be great but he sure is a great improvement.

And John Tory - please, please spare us. He spends all his lurking, coming out of secret alley ways with comments on everything and anything like a voyeur or something. And, we’re still waiting or Tory’s cost analysis - scary!

Jason Kauppinen:

Sam I’ve always been here as well, and as for debt, lets talk about Petersen/Rae hmmm? The socialists in this province are a joke whether they’re wearing red, orange, or in Tory’s case, blue ties.

You honestly think it’s better under McSquinty then Harris? When Ontario is about to become a “have not” province for the first time under the history of equalization? Get real.

Toronto Crawler:

Keep on believing that Sam. As Staples said, people were screaming about Harris, but his popular vote went up from the 1995 election (44.8%) to 1999 (45.1%). The only ones with views like yourself are the loony left that are mostly centralized in downtown Toronto… if he had stayed on in 2003 instead of greasy Eves, he would have won again. The rest of the province, the “silent majority” mainstream Canadians are ready to throw McLiar out and bring the Tories back in.

And your attitude that people who are “conservatives” should just leave? Keep that attitude and nobody will be left here except for unskilled people and bleeding-hearts who take more than they give, collapsing the economy and tax base. 1 in 9 medical school graduates here already leave for the U.S. within two years of graduating, while we have a shortage of doctors. You’ll start seeing that in other skilled trades as other jurisdictions have more to offer and a higher standard of living than what Ontario can provide. It will be a silent departure of people “voting with their feet”, no noise or publicity, and people here won’t realize it until it’s too late.

Greg,

I would probably predict a McGuinty minority with a strong possibility of a majority as some of the Greens move back.

Given the bad news around Mike Colle et al, this result looks pretty decent to me. By October, barring new material, all anyone is going to remember is the free candy Dalton has been handing out.

So basically … Ontarians are at the mercy of these cretins for another term!

Good Lord…………

Sam:

Toronto Crawler- I’m not looney and I don’t live in Toronto - I live in rural Ontario.

I wasn’t asking anyone to leave, but if they’re that unhappy, why stay and bitch.

And, I know very well about medical personal and how many left to go to the US when Harris downsized the hospitals in and we have’nt been able to recover since. We are now paying the price for his downloading of services to property taxpayers. We could go on.

Toronto Crawler:

“I know very well about medical personal and how many left to go to the US when Harris downsized the hospitals in and we have’nt been able to recover since”

The 1 in 9 numbers aren’t from the Harris years… it was a recent survey from the medical classes of 2005 (2 years into the McGuinty era) that asked where the graduates are now. The reason given by those respondents are plain and simple - money and working conditions are better elsewhere than what could be offered here.

As usual, people like yourself put all blame on Harris when he had nothing to do with that statistic. And they also ignore the fact that total overall and absolute health spending went UP under the Harris years when compared to the previous Rae govt. Yes, in some locales or specific circumstances there was downsizing, but the money was shifted to other areas or regions that needed it more. They were willing to make the painful decisions to restructure health care while keeping the government’s size in check. The Liberals will keep things the same to get votes even if things are out of date or don’t make sense anymore, and just add to the pot… making the size of government bigger and bigger.
