Shall I point out

that we still have by-elections under MMP if any of the 90 riding MPPs retire and these by-elections would be run under a FPTP system? Therefore the joy of Outremont would still be available to voters if Ontario adopts the version of proportional representation on offer.
And if the Citizens Assembly had chosen an open list system instead of the closed party list system we could always have had this joy. That is why, if Ontario decides to go with MMP, the first thing I will do is starting working to get that flaw in the system fixed. (He says like he can do it all on his own...)

Do you know what variant of open-list MMP you like?

I don’t know if it is officially a variant but I want the list members to be chosen by the vote they got in the election. Two advantages, no list only candidates and no ability to get stacked onto a party list. You get in based on your popular vote.

Um, not interested, thanks.:

I like the variant in which no matter whose “list” rules the day, they get to put their lazy-assed, dishonest, socialist mittens on less than 1% of my money.

Honestly now, do you really think you can invent a better game of one-potato-two-potato when it’s already a done deal that someone else is going to end up owning or controlling all the potatoes in the end? The only rational response is to stop putting potatoes in the game, which is what people are doing in greater and greater numbers.

Turn off the CBC, put down the Globe and Mail, and listen in a bit on The Real World:

“The non-existent savings rate? The brain drain? Canadians losing interest in professional education? Government revenues, salaries and number of employees rising 50-100% faster than outside of the government? Hello? If you have a few minutes, sir, we’re conducting a survey on how you wish to select the people who are going to handle all the money they took from you!” (CLICK)

Alan:

MMP will get us much more representative legislatures. And as we know, a bag of rotten apples is morally inferior to a bag of rotten apples and oranges.

Forward!

Hear, here, Greg! That’s exactly what I’m going to do too.

I prefer the Regional Open variant which does away with lists and uses the local candidates of the all the ridings in the region, instead, like wildcard spots in playoffs.
