Question 1, 2 and 3

Looks pretty clear that we have another Liberal majority government. And to my surprise the Liberals look to getting more support than MMP. At just before 10:00 the support for MMP was 36%. Let's just say that proportional representation is off the agenda for a long, long time - in Ontario at least. I would say that kills it federally for a long time as well.

PlaidShirt:

MMP with closed lists was always a poor choice for proportional representation. Party chosen candidates was a big issue in why people opposed MMP. STV or straight up PR with open lists would have garnered much more support.

Anyways, nothing will happen in Ontario until another province or municipality experiments with some form of PR.

At this point MMP is barely over 30%. Voters maybe dumb but they can see through the hacks’ attempt to entrench themselves.

Now, if we could just get rid of the law requiring the federal leaders to sign off on local candidate’s nominations we would be on our way back to democracy.

Alan:

A clear majority voted in favour of majority governments, a next to impossibility under MMP in Canada. That must include a lot of people who “wasted” their votes on parties other than the Liberals. Interesting.

JBG:

I voted for MMP, but I had big problems with it and am not upset it lost.

Deanna:

A majority of BC clearly voted for PR (STV) but we were 2% off the super-majority required to pass. (58% of the popular vote supported it, and it was supported in 97% of ridings - a majority of the majority, you might say)

The government has pledged to let us vote on it again in 2009. We’ll see if we can pull this off in about 18 months.

nbt:

I think those (citizens assembly) that bring these electoral reform ideas forward for a vote are slowly realizing that the more choices on the ballot come referendum day, the better the chance there is of one of the reforms passing.
